River Wye
August 30th
I've been away for 2 months, working and fishing in Europe and Cuba. The fishing was wonderful, particularly for bonefish, but it was a treat to be back on the Wye. The river was a little high, but it was falling, and I couldn't wait any longer to reconnect with the river.
And the river was in a most generous mood. The day was autumnal, with mists and the first leaves changing colour. There was the odd rise, but nothing to suggest the fish would be keen. But they were, grabbing the nymph and dry fly with equal gusto. After a couple hours I was a happy angler, with many grayling and trout caught and released.
After lunch I had the pleasure to help a young lad to catch his first grayling. It was treat to see him cast, hook and land not just one but two splendid fish. I'm not sure who had the bigger smile him or me. Fishing is a lovely sport.
